The key difference: single vs dual receptor action
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates both GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors. This dual action is why Mounjaro tends to produce greater average weight loss in clinical trials — approximately 20–22% of body weight versus 14–15% for Wegovy at maximum doses.
However, average trial results do not predict individual outcomes. Some patients respond exceptionally well to semaglutide; others find tirzepatide better tolerated. The right choice depends on your medical history, current medications, and how your body responds during the initial weeks of treatment.
Side effect profiles
Both medications share a similar gastrointestinal side effect profile — nausea, constipation, and occasionally vomiting or diarrhoea — because both slow gastric emptying. These effects are most pronounced during dose escalation and typically subside within 4–8 weeks.
Some patients find Mounjaro produces slightly more nausea at equivalent stages of dose escalation, while others find the opposite. There is no reliable way to predict individual tolerability before starting treatment. If side effects are significant, dose escalation can be paused or slowed — this is a normal part of clinical management, not a treatment failure.

Both medications are administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection using a pre-filled pen device. Wegovy doses escalate from 0.25mg to a maintenance dose of 2.4mg over approximately 16 weeks. Mounjaro doses escalate from 2.5mg to a maximum of 15mg over a similar period, though many patients achieve their target weight at lower maintenance doses.
At EVERLean, dose progression is guided by clinical review — we do not automatically escalate to the maximum dose if a patient is achieving good results and tolerating their current dose well.
Cost and availability
Both medications are available through EVERLean on a monthly subscription basis. Pricing varies by dose tier. Mounjaro is generally priced slightly higher at equivalent dose stages, reflecting its newer status and dual-receptor mechanism. Supply has historically been more constrained for Mounjaro, though availability has improved significantly through 2025–2026.
NHS prescribing of both medications remains limited and criteria-dependent. Private prescribing through a CQC-registered clinic like EVERLean offers faster access and ongoing clinical support.
